09/29/2008 - 2008 Angels on the Bluff Tour

The Natchez City Cemetery Association invites you to join us for our annual fundraiser. Don't miss this evening of enthralling, entertaining and informative vignettes. Learn more about some of our proud ancestors who inhabit this 100-acre treasure.

Your evening will begin at the Natchez Visitors Center, where you will board a bus at your reserved time. Our dedicated and highly informed guides will ride with you and your group to the cemetery.

Learn about interesting sites within the cemetery. Did you know that the recently developed Fort McPherson site was originally the site of a U.S. Marine hospital, a Confederate hospital, a Union hospital, and the Natchez Seminary? The Natchez Seminary later moved to Jackson, MS, where it became Jackson State University. Take a walk through our Babyland area, a resting place for approximately 100 precious little ones.

This year you will meet the following diversified roster of characters spanning two centuries. Let me introduce...

James Lewis Hopkins - A 120 year old Confederate veteran portrayed by the popular Angels' actor, Sam Jones.

John Lambert - Patriot, soldier and citizen of Natchez who is buried at the City Cemetery but enjoys an impressive marker in Memorial Park downtown.

Lyman Godfrey Aldrich - A Natchez businessman of the late 1800's who served as Alderman and continued the L. D. Aldrich family business. He will be portrayed by Lyman Davenport "Buddy" Aldrich, a direct descendant.

Alvarez Fisk - Antebellum planter and businessman who lived in Choctaw. He started the Fisk Library in Natchez and in New Orleans, which in now the New Orleans Public Library. Portrayed by Ed Esau of the Historic Natchez Foundation.

John Bayard Maxwell and Anne Wilkins - a tragic love story between these two characters was featured in the book Early Romances of Historic Natchez. This portrayal of Rusty and Beverly Jenkins will likely be one you won't forget.

Mayor William Gwin Benbrook - Many major public works in Natchez were accomplished under his thirty-three year Mayoral administration. His descendants will portray his interesting life.

Margaret Martin - Beloved teacher and principal for decades at Natchez High School. Her life spanned 102 years. This accomplished life will be portrayed by her direct descendant.

J. T. Robinson - A lifetime Natchezian whose family included many policemen. Serving with the U. S. Marines in WWII before becoming a Natchez Policeman, he was elected Police Chief of Natchez during the tumultuous civil rights era from 1962 to 1982. Chief Robinson was respected as a fair man by both the black and white citizens. He was also remembered for his tremendous sense of humor, delivering one-liners as well as any comedian. His story, though relatively recent, is one that everyone will enjoy.

Musical entertainment and informative guides will add pleasure to your moonlight walk with prominent Natchezians. Come join the Natchez City Cemetery Association for a delightful evening on Friday and Saturday night 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

A TICKET IS A MUST!!!!!!!!! Reserve yours at the Natchez Visitors Center.

Call 601-446-6345 for ticket reservations. Ticket sales began August 1, 2008.
