Regardless of the vandalism setback, progress is being made to reclaim the beauty of our very special grounds.
The wall to the Plot 1 lot of the George Miller family, who donated the water fountain at Main and Commerce streets, has been rebuilt. That fountain replaced Natchez’s original fountain, which was relocated to the middle of Zurhellen 1 section of the cemetery around 1900. It has been leveled and reworked.
Steps have been built that allow you to carefully climb up to Dick Dana’s lot on Steamboat Road.
The G.A. Green lot on the Avenue of Generals behind the Shelter House has been totally rebuilt.
An ongoing complete restoration of the much-viewed “Neihysel” lot in Plot II has been completed with the cleaning of all stones.
In the curve of Plot 1, the significant stone of “York, A Faithful Servant,” who died May 7, 1854 has been raised, cleaned and turned so that it is easier to see. Many other stones have also been cleaned in Plot 1.
On Catholic Hill, the wall of the “Greany” lot on a corner has been rebuilt. St. Mary Basilica paid for the repair of the brick wall that surrounds graves of the Christian Brothers. |
