In conjunction with the Natchez Indians’ Archaeology Program Series, Dr. Ian W. Brown will present an interesting talk about cemeteries Thursday, January 5th at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the Grand Village of the Natchez Indians.
Brown’s talk will be on "Social Patterns in Alabama Cemeteries." The program will draw from his long-term study of the historic cemeteries in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, known as "The Marking Graves Project."
Ian Brown is best known to Miss-Lou residents for his longtime association with a group of archaeologists known as the "Lower Mississippi Survey," which conducted extensive studies of the prehistoric and early historic Indian tribes in the Lower Mississippi River Valley. He is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Alabama and Curator of Gulf Coast Archaeology at the Alabama Museum. Prior to joining the faculty of the University of Alabama in 1991, Brown served as Research Associate, Associate Curator, and Assistant Director of the Peabody Museum at Harvard University. He also taught as a Lecturer at Harvard University. He received his B. A. degree from Harvard in 1973, and his M. A. (1975) and Ph.D. (1979) from Brown University.
In recent years, he conducted archaeological excavations at the original Tabasco factory on Avery Island, Louisiana, and participated in a study of the prehistoric salt industry in the Three Gorges region of China. Brown is currently conducting a study of historic and prehistoric salt production in England.
Admission is free and seating is limited.
Light refreshments will be served. As usual, people are invited to bring artifacts for identification and display.
