Cistern House Restoration
|
 |
Over the years and due to weather and neglect, four cistern houses have become in major need of repair. These buildings are unique to the Natchez City Cemetery and sadly they are in dangerously poor condition. Some are leaning, dry-rotting, and the benches are now resting on the ground.
The cistern houses were constructed in the early 1900’s.
They were used by the families visiting the graves of their departed loved ones. Here they retrieved water for their flowers and were able to sit out of the hot Southern sun.
Due to their age the cistern houses are considered historical structures and cannot be torn down and replaced. We have investigated the steps necessary to undertake this project. We would appreciate individuals who would volunteer their services in engineering and design to draft the plans of the existing structure so that the appropriate reconstruction could be made by professional contractors.
The Cemetery Board would appreciate any donations to help complete this timely project.
